Orange pigment refers to lipofuscin accumulation that appears as orange or yellow deposits overlying choroidal lesions, visible on fundoscopy and particularly prominent with autofluorescence imaging. These deposits are composed of lipofuscin granules from photoreceptor outer segment turnover and represent chronic changes associated with retinal pigment epithelium dysfunction. In the context of choroidal nevi, the presence of orange pigment is considered a risk factor for malignant transformation into melanoma and is incorporated into risk assessment protocols. The pigment appears hyperautofluorescent on fundus autofluorescence photography and should be carefully documented in terms of distribution and extent when monitoring suspicious choroidal lesions.
