radiation retinopathy

Delayed complication of ocular radiotherapy characterized by retinal vascular damage and vision loss.

Full Definition

A progressive retinal vascular disease that develops months to years after ocular radiotherapy, particularly following plaque brachytherapy or external beam radiation. The condition is characterized by microangiopathy, cotton wool spots, retinal hemorrhages, hard exudates, and eventual capillary non-perfusion similar to diabetic retinopathy. Severe cases may develop neovascularization, vitreous hemorrhage, and tractional retinal detachment. The risk correlates with radiation dose to the retina and may require treatment with anti-VEGF therapy or laser photocoagulation.
