Descemet's Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) is a selective corneal transplant procedure that replaces only the innermost layer of the cornea - Descemet's membrane and the endothelium. This technique offers faster visual recovery and better final visual outcomes compared to penetrating keratoplasty, with lower rejection rates. The procedure is technically challenging due to the extremely thin graft tissue, which can be difficult to handle and position. DMEK is primarily used to treat endothelial dysfunction conditions such as Fuchs' dystrophy and pseudophakic bullous keratopathy.
