Full Definition

Pneumoperitoneum insufflation is the controlled introduction of carbon dioxide gas into the peritoneal cavity during laparoscopic procedures to create a working space between organs and the abdominal wall. CO2 is preferred because it is rapidly absorbed and less dangerous if gas embolism occurs. Proper insufflation technique requires monitoring of intra-abdominal pressure, typically maintained at 12-15 mmHg, to optimize visualization while minimizing physiologic effects including decreased venous return and respiratory compromise.
