Transplanted bone material used to augment or replace deficient alveolar bone for implant placement.
Full Definition
Bone grafting involves the placement of bone substitute materials to augment or regenerate alveolar bone volume for future implant placement or to repair bony defects. Graft materials may be autogenous (from the patient), allogeneic (from another human), xenogeneic (from another species), or synthetic. The graft provides scaffolding for new bone formation and must integrate with existing bone through the process of creeping substitution.
