Full Definition
Collodion baby is a clinical phenotype present at birth in which the infant is encased in a tight, shiny, cellophane-like membrane that restricts movement and may cause feeding difficulties and temperature regulation problems. This membrane typically begins to crack and peel within days to weeks, revealing underlying skin that may be normal or show features of ichthyosis. The condition may be associated with various forms of congenital ichthyosis or may resolve completely (lamellar ichthyosis of the newborn).
