congenital dermal melanocytosis

Benign blue-gray birthmarks caused by dermal melanocytes, formerly called Mongolian spots.

Full Definition

Congenital dermal melanocytosis refers to benign birthmarks characterized by blue, blue-gray, or blue-black patches caused by melanocytes located in the dermis. These lesions are most common in individuals of Asian, African, Hispanic, and Native American ancestry, affecting up to 90% of these populations. They typically appear on the lumbosacral area but can occur anywhere on the body. Most fade significantly during childhood, though some may persist into adulthood.

Usage

Usage note: Preferred term replacing the outdated and potentially offensive 'Mongolian spot' or 'Mongolian blue spot'.
