lymphatic malformation
A congenital abnormality of lymphatic vessels presenting as fluid-filled cysts or masses.
Full Definition
Lymphatic malformations are congenital abnormalities of the lymphatic system characterized by dilated, malformed lymphatic channels that form cystic or solid masses. These lesions may be microcystic (small vessels), macrocystic (large cysts), or mixed. Common locations include the neck, axilla, chest, and extremities. Unlike hemangiomas, lymphatic malformations do not involute and may grow proportionally with the child or expand due to infection, trauma, or hormonal changes.
Usage
Usage note: Preferred over older term 'lymphangioma'; specify micro-, macro-, or mixed cystic type when known.
