Wood's lamp examination

A diagnostic tool using ultraviolet light to detect certain skin conditions and infections in pediatric dermatology.

Full Definition

Wood's lamp examination involves the use of a handheld ultraviolet light source (peak wavelength 365nm) to evaluate skin conditions under darkened room conditions. In pediatric dermatology, it is particularly useful for diagnosing tinea capitis (which may show blue-green fluorescence with certain organisms), assessing pigmentary disorders such as vitiligo (which appears bright white), and evaluating suspected bacterial infections like erythrasma. The examination must be performed in a completely darkened room after allowing the eyes to adjust for several minutes. Some conditions require the lamp to be held close to the skin for several minutes before fluorescence becomes apparent.
