hyperandrogenism

Excessive androgen production or action in females, causing masculinization features like hirsutism, acne, and irregular periods.

Full Definition

Hyperandrogenism refers to elevated levels or increased sensitivity to androgens (male hormones) in females, resulting in clinical manifestations of virilization. In pediatric and adolescent endocrinology, hyperandrogenism commonly presents as hirsutism, severe acne, male-pattern baldness, deepening voice, or clitoromegaly. Common causes include polycystic ovary syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and androgen-secreting tumors. Early recognition is crucial as hyperandrogenism can significantly impact psychological well-being and fertility in young women. Biochemical evaluation typically includes measurement of total and free testosterone, androstenedione, and DHEA-S.

Usage note: Broader term than 'virilization'; includes milder androgenic effects.
