Full Definition
The integrated endocrine system responsible for reproductive development and function, consisting of the hypothalamus, anterior pituitary gland, and gonads. The hypothalamus releases gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which stimulates the pituitary to produce luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). These gonadotropins act on the testes or ovaries to produce sex steroids (testosterone, estradiol) and gametes. The axis operates through negative feedback mechanisms and undergoes dramatic changes during puberty, transitioning from quiescence in childhood to full activation in adolescence. Disruptions at any level can cause delayed puberty, hypogonadism, or other reproductive disorders.
