Full Definition

Midparental height is a calculation used to estimate a child's genetic height potential based on their parents' statures. For boys, it is calculated as (father's height + mother's height + 13 cm) ÷ 2; for girls, it is (father's height + mother's height - 13 cm) ÷ 2. The 13 cm adjustment accounts for the average height difference between males and females. This calculation provides a target height range (typically ±10 cm) that represents the expected adult height based on genetic factors. Midparental height helps clinicians distinguish between pathological short stature and familial short stature, guiding decisions about further investigation and treatment.
