gastroschisis

Pronunciation: gas-TROS-ki-sis

A congenital abdominal wall defect where intestines protrude through an opening beside the umbilicus without a protective membrane.

Full Definition

Gastroschisis is a birth defect characterized by herniation of abdominal contents through a full-thickness defect in the abdominal wall, typically to the right of the umbilicus. Unlike omphalocele, the protruding organs are not covered by a membrane. This condition requires immediate surgical intervention after birth and may involve multiple staged procedures. The exposed bowel is at risk for dehydration, infection, and functional impairment.

Usage

Usage note: Often confused with omphalocele; key distinction is lack of covering membrane in gastroschisis.
