Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) is a form of hemoglobin that is chemically linked to glucose, providing a measure of average blood sugar control over the preceding 2-3 months. In pediatric hematology, elevated HbA1c levels may be observed in children with diabetes who also have hematologic conditions. The test is particularly relevant when managing children with both diabetes and blood disorders, as chronic hyperglycemia can affect red blood cell morphology and function. Normal pediatric values typically range from 4-6%, though this may vary based on age and underlying conditions.
