Intracellular precipitates of denatured hemoglobin visible with supravital staining. They indicate oxidative damage to red blood cells.

Full Definition

Heinz bodies are inclusion bodies within red blood cells consisting of precipitated, denatured hemoglobin. They form when hemoglobin is damaged by oxidative stress, particularly in conditions like G6PD deficiency, unstable hemoglobin variants, or drug-induced hemolysis. These bodies are not visible on routine Wright-Giemsa stained smears but require supravital staining with methyl violet or crystal violet for detection. In pediatric patients, Heinz bodies may be seen during hemolytic crises triggered by infections, certain foods (fava beans), or medications. Their presence helps distinguish oxidative hemolysis from other causes of anemia.
