Anemia caused by premature destruction of red blood cells, common in pediatric genetic disorders.

Full Definition

Hemolytic anemia occurs when red blood cells are destroyed faster than they can be replaced by the bone marrow, leading to anemia and often jaundice. In children, this can be caused by inherited conditions like sickle cell disease, hereditary spherocytosis, or G6PD deficiency, or acquired causes such as autoimmune disorders or infections. Laboratory findings typically include elevated bilirubin, decreased haptoglobin, and increased reticulocyte count as the body attempts to compensate.
