Ganglioneuroma is a benign tumor arising from neural crest cells that represents the most mature form of neuroblastic tumors. It is composed entirely of mature ganglion cells embedded within abundant Schwannian stroma, with no immature neuroblastic elements present. Ganglioneuromas can occur as primary tumors or may develop through spontaneous maturation of neuroblastoma, particularly in infants. These tumors typically have an indolent clinical course and excellent prognosis, often requiring only surgical excision when feasible. Ganglioneuromas may be hormonally active, producing catecholamines that can cause symptoms similar to those seen with neuroblastoma, though usually less severe.
