Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a potentially life-threatening complication following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation where donor immune cells recognize recipient tissues as foreign and mount an immune attack. GVHD is classified as acute (typically occurring within 100 days) or chronic (beyond 100 days or with chronic features). Acute GVHD commonly affects skin, gastrointestinal tract, and liver, while chronic GVHD can affect multiple organ systems. Prevention typically involves immunosuppressive prophylaxis, and treatment requires careful balance between controlling GVHD and maintaining graft-versus-tumor effects.
