Full Definition

Posterior cranial fossa syndrome (PCS), also known as cerebellar mutism syndrome, is a well-recognized complication that can occur after surgical resection of posterior fossa tumors, particularly medulloepithelioma and other cerebellar tumors in children. The syndrome is characterized by mutism (inability to speak), ataxia, emotional lability, and sometimes cognitive dysfunction. PCS typically develops 24-48 hours after surgery and may last weeks to months, with some children experiencing permanent deficits. The exact pathophysiology remains unclear, but damage to cerebellar-cerebral connections is thought to be responsible. Recognition of PCS is important for appropriate rehabilitation planning and family counseling.
