Full Definition
Wilms tumor, also known as nephroblastoma, is the most common primary renal malignancy in children, typically occurring between ages 2-5 years. It accounts for approximately 5% of childhood cancers and can be associated with genetic syndromes such as WAGR or Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. The tumor staging follows the National Wilms Tumor Study Group (NWTSG) or International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) protocols. Treatment approach may involve pre-operative chemotherapy depending on the staging system used.
