duodenal web

A thin membrane partially obstructing the duodenal lumen, causing incomplete bowel obstruction.

Full Definition

A duodenal web is a congenital anomaly consisting of a thin, perforated membrane that partially obstructs the duodenal lumen. Unlike complete duodenal atresia, the web allows some passage of intestinal contents, resulting in incomplete obstruction that may present later in infancy or childhood. Imaging typically shows a distended stomach and proximal duodenum with a characteristic 'windsock sign' on upper GI series, where contrast outlines the web creating a windsock appearance. The web may be associated with other anomalies including Down syndrome and should prompt evaluation for additional congenital anomalies.

Usage

Usage note: Describe the 'windsock sign' when present on imaging; distinguish from complete atresia.
