Ladd bands

Abnormal peritoneal bands that extend from the malpositioned cecum to the right upper quadrant, potentially causing duodenal obstruction in intestinal malrotation.

Full Definition

Abnormal fibrous peritoneal bands that develop as a consequence of incomplete midgut rotation during embryologic development. These bands typically extend from the abnormally positioned cecum in the right upper quadrant to the lateral abdominal wall and may cross over the duodenum, potentially causing external compression and obstruction of the second and third portions of the duodenum. Named after pediatric surgeon William Ladd, these bands are a component of the malrotation complex and represent one mechanism by which malrotation can cause symptoms even without volvulus. Surgical division of these bands (Ladd procedure) is performed to relieve potential duodenal compression and prevent future volvulus.

Usage

Usage note: Specific to malrotation; should not be confused with post-surgical adhesive bands which occur after abdominal surgery.
