Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease
Also written as: LCPD — Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease
Avascular necrosis of the femoral head in children, resulting in progressive deformity and potential hip dysfunction.
Full Definition
Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease is a childhood condition involving avascular necrosis of the femoral head due to interruption of blood supply. The disease progresses through distinct radiographic stages: initial/necrosis, fragmentation, reossification, and residual phases. Imaging shows progressive flattening and fragmentation of the femoral head with eventual remodeling. The lateral pillar classification system is used to predict prognosis and guide treatment decisions in affected children.
Usage
Usage note: Always specify the stage and classification when describing findings.
