Full Definition

Anti-Jo-1 antibodies are autoantibodies directed against histidyl-tRNA synthetase, an enzyme involved in protein synthesis. In pediatric rheumatology, these antibodies are most commonly associated with juvenile dermatomyositis and polymyositis, and their presence often indicates a higher risk of developing interstitial lung disease, arthritis, and other systemic manifestations. Anti-Jo-1 is one of several myositis-specific antibodies (MSAs) that help define clinical phenotypes and guide treatment decisions. Children with anti-Jo-1 positive myositis may have a more chronic disease course and require more aggressive immunosuppressive therapy. The antibodies are detected using immunoprecipitation or ELISA-based assays.
