CDH

Also written as: CDH — Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia requiring urgent neonatal surgical intervention.

Full Definition

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a birth defect where the diaphragm fails to form completely, allowing abdominal organs to move into the chest cavity. This condition affects lung development and can cause severe respiratory distress in newborns. The most common type is Bochdalek hernia, occurring on the left side in 85% of cases. Treatment involves initial stabilization of respiratory function followed by surgical repair, often requiring patch closure of large defects.

Usage note: Spell out on first use; distinguish from acquired hernias.
