Choanal Atresia

Pronunciation: ko-AN-al uh-TREE-zhuh

Congenital blockage of the nasal passages at the back of the nose affecting newborn breathing.

Full Definition

Choanal atresia is a birth defect where one or both nasal passages are blocked by abnormal bony or soft tissue. Since newborns are obligate nasal breathers, bilateral choanal atresia is a neonatal emergency requiring immediate airway management. Unilateral cases may present later with chronic nasal congestion and feeding difficulties. Treatment involves surgical opening of the blocked choanae, often performed endoscopically.

Usage

Usage note: Bilateral cases are surgical emergencies; unilateral cases may be managed electively.
