Eventration

Congenital or acquired elevation of an intact but abnormally thin diaphragm, distinct from true diaphragmatic hernia.

Full Definition

Eventration refers to abnormal elevation of an intact diaphragm that is congenitally thin, weakened, or paralyzed. Unlike true congenital diaphragmatic hernia, the diaphragm remains intact without a defect, but its abnormal position allows abdominal contents to push upward into the thoracic cavity. Congenital eventration results from incomplete muscularization during development, while acquired eventration may follow phrenic nerve injury. The condition most commonly affects the left hemidiaphragm and may present with respiratory symptoms in neonates or remain asymptomatic. Surgical plication may be indicated for symptomatic cases to restore normal diaphragmatic function and improve respiratory mechanics.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from true hernia where diaphragm is deficient.
