VACTERL Association

A constellation of congenital anomalies affecting vertebrae, anus, cardiac, trachea, esophagus, renal, and limb systems.

Full Definition

VACTERL association is a non-random pattern of birth defects that includes Vertebral defects, Anal atresia, Cardiac defects, Tracheoesophageal fistula, Renal abnormalities, and Limb defects. The diagnosis requires at least three of these component features. While the exact cause is unknown, it represents a developmental field defect occurring during embryogenesis. Patients require multidisciplinary care and staged surgical interventions to address the various anomalies.
