epispadias

Pronunciation: ep-ih-SPAY-dee-as

Congenital condition where the urethral opening is located on the upper side of the penis rather than at the tip.

Full Definition

Epispadias is a rare congenital anomaly affecting the positioning of the urethral meatus, which opens on the dorsal (upper) aspect of the penis instead of at the glans tip. This condition often occurs in conjunction with exstrophy-epispadias complex and may require surgical reconstruction. The severity ranges from glandular epispadias (opening near the glans) to penopubic epispadias (opening at the base). Proper documentation distinguishes this from the more common hypospadias, where the opening is on the ventral surface.

Usage

Usage note: Always distinguish from hypospadias in clinical documentation; specify location (glandular, penile, or penopubic).

In Context

  • "The patient was diagnosed with complete epispadias requiring staged reconstruction." — Surgical consultation report
  • "Epispadias repair was planned in conjunction with bladder exstrophy closure." — Operative planning notes
