Efferent Nerve

A nerve fibre that carries motor commands from the central nervous system outward to muscles and glands; paired with 'afferent nerve' as a critical confusable in PM&R documentation.

Full Definition

Efferent nerves, commonly called motor nerves, convey signals from the brain and spinal cord to effector organs, primarily skeletal muscles. In physical medicine and rehabilitation, efferent pathway integrity is assessed through motor nerve conduction studies, electromyography (EMG), and clinical strength testing. Damage to efferent pathways produces weakness, paralysis, or altered muscle tone, which are central concerns in PM&R practice. Editors must be vigilant when the terms 'afferent' and 'efferent' appear in close proximity in neurological reports, as transposition errors are common and carry significant clinical consequences. The distinction is especially important in documents addressing upper vs. lower motor neuron lesions.
