A prosthetic limb design in which an internal structural frame (pylon) is covered by a soft cosmetic foam shell, mimicking natural limb contours.

Full Definition

An endoskeletal prosthesis, sometimes called a modular prosthesis, uses an internal load-bearing pylon or frame as its structural core, surrounded by a shaped foam cover finished with a skin-toned outer layer. This design allows relatively easy component replacement and adjustment without disturbing the cosmetic shell. Editors should note that 'endoskeletal' contrasts directly with 'exoskeletal' (crustacean or hard-shell) design. The term is frequently hyphenated, though some clinical publishers prefer the closed form. It appears in clinical notes, prosthetic prescriptions, and insurance documentation.
