Head Array

A proximity-sensor or switch-based drive-control interface mounted around a wheelchair headrest, allowing users with limited limb function to control a powered wheelchair using head movements.

Full Definition

A head array typically consists of three or more sensors positioned at the sides and rear of a headrest pad that detect head contact or proximity; each sensor maps to a directional drive command (left, right, forward) or to a mode switch. The device is used when a user cannot operate a standard joystick due to high-level spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, or other conditions affecting upper-limb function. It is important to distinguish head array from head switches (discrete on/off contacts) and sip-and-puff controls (breath-activated). Accuracy matters for HCPCS coding and clinical justification.
