Maximum Expiratory Pressure measurement that assesses respiratory muscle strength during forced expiration against resistance.

Full Definition

Maximum Expiratory Pressure (MEP) is a pulmonary function test that measures the greatest pressure a patient can generate during forced expiration against a closed airway or high resistance. This test evaluates the strength of expiratory muscles, including the abdominal muscles, internal intercostals, and accessory respiratory muscles. MEP is typically measured from total lung capacity (TLC) and is expressed in centimeters of water (cmH2O) or millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Normal values vary by age, gender, and body size, but generally range from 100-200 cmH2O in healthy adults. Reduced MEP values may indicate respiratory muscle weakness or neuromuscular disorders.
