Exercise-induced hypertension refers to an abnormally elevated blood pressure response during exercise testing, typically defined as systolic blood pressure exceeding 210 mmHg in men or 190 mmHg in women during maximal exercise. This condition may indicate underlying cardiovascular disease, increased risk of future hypertension, or subclinical cardiac dysfunction even in apparently healthy athletes. The exaggerated pressure response can result from increased peripheral vascular resistance, reduced arterial compliance, or impaired cardiac function. In sports cardiology, identifying exercise-induced hypertension is important for cardiovascular risk stratification and may warrant further evaluation including ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and cardiac imaging.
