urethral stricture disease
Narrowing of the urethral lumen that can predispose to or result from urologic malignancies.
Full Definition
A condition involving scarring and narrowing of the urethra that may be related to malignancy through several mechanisms. Chronic inflammation from strictures can predispose to squamous cell carcinoma development, while certain treatments for urologic cancers can cause iatrogenic strictures. Primary urethral cancers may also present initially as apparent stricture disease. Management requires careful evaluation to exclude malignancy, particularly in cases of recurrent or refractory strictures in older patients.
