A flow diverter is a specialized endovascular device consisting of a high-density, low-porosity mesh stent designed to redirect blood flow away from cerebral aneurysms while maintaining flow to branch vessels. The device creates a scaffold that promotes endothelialization across the aneurysm neck, effectively excluding the aneurysm from circulation over time. Flow diverters are particularly useful for treating large, wide-necked, or fusiform aneurysms that are difficult to treat with conventional coiling techniques. The mesh density is carefully engineered to provide sufficient flow reduction into the aneurysm while preserving normal vessel patency. Treatment success is measured by aneurysm occlusion rates at follow-up imaging, typically assessed at 6-12 months post-procedure.
