A complication of burn healing characterized by the permanent shortening and tightening of scar tissue, resulting in restricted range of motion and deformity. Contractures develop when scar tissue forms across joints or functional units, pulling tissues together and limiting normal movement. Prevention involves early mobilization, splinting, pressure garments, and sometimes surgical intervention including scar release and skin grafting.
