Full Definition

Glioma-associated seizures are epileptic events that develop as a direct result of brain tumor presence and growth. These seizures occur in 60-90% of patients with low-grade gliomas and 30-50% of those with high-grade gliomas, often presenting as the initial symptom that leads to tumor diagnosis. The mechanisms include direct cortical irritation, altered neurotransmitter balance, metabolic changes, and disruption of normal neural networks. Seizure characteristics depend on tumor location, with temporal lobe tumors commonly causing complex partial seizures and frontal tumors causing motor seizures. Management requires both antiepileptic drugs and tumor-directed therapy, as seizure control often correlates with tumor growth control.
