melanocytic nevus

Pronunciation: mel-a-no-SIT-ik NEE-vus

A benign proliferation of melanocytes appearing as a mole, which may be congenital or acquired during childhood.

Full Definition

Melanocytic nevi are benign tumors composed of nevus cells, which are modified melanocytes. They can be classified as congenital (present at birth) or acquired (developing later in childhood). Congenital melanocytic nevi are further categorized by size: small (<1.5cm), medium (1.5-19.9cm), and large/giant (≥20cm). Large congenital nevi carry increased risk for malignant transformation and require careful monitoring. Documentation should include size, location, color, surface characteristics, and any changes over time. The ABCDE criteria (Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter >6mm, Evolving) guide assessment for concerning features.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify congenital vs. acquired and document size measurements.
