The stratum corneum is the final product of keratinocyte differentiation and constitutes the principal barrier between the organism and its external environment. In paediatric patients, particularly neonates and premature infants, the stratum corneum is structurally immature, rendering it more susceptible to percutaneous absorption of topical agents and pathogen entry. Its integrity is commonly assessed via TEWL and corneometry.
