Hemoglobin A2, composed of two alpha and two delta globin chains, normally comprises 2-3% of total hemoglobin in healthy individuals. Elevated HbA2 levels (>3.5%) are a hallmark diagnostic feature of beta-thalassemia trait or minor. In pediatric hematology practice, HbA2 measurement is essential for carrier screening and genetic counseling, particularly in families with Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, or South Asian ancestry.
