cytoreduction

The process of reducing the number of cancer cells in the body through treatment interventions.

Full Definition

Cytoreduction refers to the systematic reduction of tumor burden through various therapeutic modalities including chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy. In pediatric oncology, effective cytoreduction is essential for achieving remission and improving long-term outcomes. The concept encompasses both the physical removal of tumor cells and the prevention of further cell division through cell cycle disruption. Rapid and effective cytoreduction is particularly important in aggressive pediatric malignancies to prevent complications such as tumor lysis syndrome and to restore normal organ function. The degree of cytoreduction achieved early in treatment often correlates with overall prognosis.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from 'tumor reduction' which may refer only to size decrease rather than actual cell death.

In Context

  • "The chemotherapy regimen achieved excellent cytoreduction with rapid decline in blast count." — Treatment response evaluation
  • "Surgical cytoreduction was performed prior to initiating systemic therapy." — Operative report
