Full Definition

MIBG (Metaiodobenzylguanidine) scan is a specialized nuclear medicine imaging technique that uses a radioactive tracer to detect neuroblastoma, pheochromocytoma, and other neuroendocrine tumors. The radiotracer I-123 or I-131 MIBG is taken up specifically by cells containing norepinephrine transporters, making it highly sensitive for neural crest tumors. MIBG scans are essential for neuroblastoma staging, assessing treatment response, surveillance for recurrence, and determining eligibility for MIBG therapeutic protocols. The scan requires specific patient preparation including thyroid blockade and discontinuation of certain medications that may interfere with uptake.
