Full Definition

Neuron-Specific Enolase (NSE) is a glycolytic enzyme found primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells that serves as a serum biomarker for neuroblastoma and other neural crest tumors. Elevated NSE levels correlate with tumor burden and disease stage in neuroblastoma patients, making it useful for initial diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and surveillance. NSE levels typically decline with successful treatment and may rise with disease progression or recurrence. While not as specific as urinary catecholamine metabolites, NSE provides complementary information about tumor activity and is particularly valuable in MIBG-negative neuroblastomas.
