tumor markers

Biochemical substances measurable in blood or other body fluids that can indicate the presence or progression of certain pediatric cancers.

Full Definition

Tumor markers are biochemical substances produced by cancer cells or by the body in response to cancer that can be measured in blood, urine, or other body fluids. In pediatric oncology, important tumor markers include alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) for hepatoblastoma and germ cell tumors, beta-hCG for certain germ cell tumors, and catecholamines for neuroblastoma. These markers are used for diagnosis, monitoring treatment response, and detecting relapse.
