hemianopsia
Loss of vision in half of the visual field of one or both eyes.
aberrant regeneration
Abnormal regrowth of damaged cranial nerve fibers, resulting in inappropriate innervation and paradoxical eye movements.
accommodative convergence
The involuntary convergence eye movement that accompanies accommodation when focusing on near objects.
accommodative spasm
Involuntary, sustained contraction of the ciliary muscle causing excessive focusing.
afferent pupillary defect
A condition where one pupil responds less to direct light than consensual light, indicating optic nerve damage.
AION
Arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy; vision-threatening condition associated with giant cell arteritis.
albinism
A group of inherited conditions causing reduced melanin production, resulting in characteristic ocular abnormalities inc...
anisocoria
Unequal pupil size that may be physiological or indicate neurological pathology affecting pupillary innervation.
asthenopia
Eye strain or visual fatigue characterized by discomfort, aching, or tiredness of the eyes, often associated with prolon...
binocular vision
The coordinated use of both eyes to create a single, unified visual perception with depth sensation and enhanced visual...
BRAO
Branch retinal artery occlusion causing sectoral visual field defects.
BRVO
Branch retinal vein occlusion causing retinal hemorrhages and potential vision loss.
cavernous sinus syndrome
Neurological condition affecting cranial nerves within the cavernous sinus, causing ophthalmoplegia, ptosis, and sensory...
Charles Bonnet syndrome
Complex visual hallucinations in patients with visual impairment but preserved cognitive function, not associated with p...
chiasm
The anatomical structure where optic nerve fibers partially cross, creating the basis for binocular visual field organiz...
chiasmal syndrome
Pattern of visual field defects caused by lesions at the optic chiasm, typically producing bitemporal hemianopia.
confrontation visual field
Bedside clinical assessment of visual field using finger counting or target detection.
conjugate gaze
Synchronized movement of both eyes in the same direction, controlled by brainstem gaze centers.
convergence insufficiency
A binocular vision disorder where the eyes cannot converge adequately for comfortable near vision work.
cortical visual impairment
Vision loss resulting from damage to visual cortex or visual processing areas while the eyes and optic nerves remain int...
cranial nerve palsy
Dysfunction of one or more cranial nerves controlling eye movement, often presenting with diplopia, ptosis, or pupillary...
CRAO
Central retinal artery occlusion causing acute severe vision loss.
CRVO
Central retinal vein occlusion causing retinal hemorrhages and vision loss.
cycloplegia
Paralysis of the ciliary muscle resulting in loss of accommodation.
diplopia
Double vision resulting from misalignment of the eyes or neurological dysfunction affecting eye movement.
